Surfside Beach mayor says stolen $545,000 payment sent using a ‘legitimate email address’

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Surfside Beach Mayor Robert Krouse on Friday reiterated that “town processes were followed” in March when officials electronically sent a North Carolina-based contractor more than $545,000 that the company never received.

Earlier this week, Administrator Gerald Vincent said town leaders were waiting for the results of an independent forensic audit and a SLED investigation into the March cyber incident involving the payment that never reached Gastonia-based Wildcat Contractors. However, he added that the town’s insurer, Great American Insurance Group, has told the town that it will not cover the loss. The town’s insurance also remains intact.

Krouse said Friday that the town “has not lost any money at this point.”…
