Nexstar Founder’s Day: WFXR staff volunteer with Feeding SWVA

SALEM, Va. (WFXR) – 30 years ago, WFXR’s parent company, Nexstar, created its Founders Day of Caring, which is where the over 200 stations across the country get inside their own communities, volunteering with local nonprofits. On Friday, June 12, staff with WFXR partnered with Feeding Southwest Virginia– doing quality checks on the food they receive that goes out to the over 20 counties and nine cities it serves. In our region– one in seven people are food insecure– with that rising each day.

Randy Holden is the Director of Volunteer Services at Feeding Southwest Virginia. He says the organization has seen an increase in food insecurity.“We’ve had, more families coming in than what we have accustomed to. Particularly with Snap programs and some of the other programs that, have people concerned. And you can see that concern when they come to our pantry. You can just see it in their face, and you can see it in their body language that people are concerned about where their next meal is coming from.” People from every department at WFXR helped to clean, sort and ensure each food item was in date, helping serve the communities we cover every day.

WFXR Digital Producer, Samantha Trezevant, says, “For me, I write about food insecurity all the time. And it’s just great to be here in the front lines and being involved with giving back to the community. It’s very easy to come in and volunteer today. We’re out having a great time. We’re laughing with each other, keeping each other company while we give back to the community.”It’s particularly important to donate your time now during summer vacation as it’s one of the food banks’ busiest times of year…
