The heat is forecasted to stick around for folks in southern New Mexico this afternoon. High temperatures on Friday are expected to peak in the 90s and possibly 100s in sections of the south. At the beginning of the afternoon temperatures reached the 80s in Albuquerque and the 70s in northeast New Mexico. Showers and storms also developed in the Sacramento Mountains. Additional showers and storms are forecasted to ignite along the central mountain chain and east later today. A few storms could become strong to severe bringing large hail, damaging winds and localized heavy rainfall to the east. This is the first round of storms that is expected as we look ahead to the weekend.
Sufficient moisture from the surface to the upper atmosphere will support shower and storms this weekend. Tomorrow’s round of storms will develop in afternoon before becoming isolated to scattered through the evening moving from west to east. Another round of scattered showers and storms are forecasted for Sunday too. Drier air is expected to limit the number of showers and storms on Monday and Tuesday. Regardless, some of the heaviest rainfall is expected to accumulate in parts of southeast New Mexico through Monday.
