Exciting Giraffe Habitat Expansion on the Horizon
The Great Plains Zoo may soon be giving its tallest residents a much larger place to call home.
According to Pigeon 605, zoo officials recently shared a first look at a proposed expansion and improvement project for the giraffe habitat. Zoo CEO Becky Dewitz described the plans as a “high-level concept” that would create more room for the animals while also improving public feeding opportunities.

One of the most exciting features of the proposal would bring the giraffes closer to the heart of the zoo. Dewitz said visitors enjoying the splash pad area would be able to see the giraffes nearby, creating a more interactive experience for families.
Boosting Revenue, Supporting Accreditation and Long-term Goals
The project could also help generate additional revenue through the expanded giraffe feeding opportunities. Some funding for the project may be requested through the City of Sioux Falls’ 2027 Capital Improvement Program.
Dewitz also shared that the giraffe habitat has been identified as an area of “continued concern” by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Improving the exhibit would support the zoo’s long-term master plan goals and help maintain accreditation standards…
