Scuba diving safety in Hawaii: Experts share tips after recent diver death

HONOLULU (Island News) — A recent scuba diving death off Oahu is serving as a reminder that while scuba diving is widely considered a safe recreational activity, proper training, physical fitness and honest self-assessment can play a critical role in preventing emergencies underwater.

A 73-year-old woman died in May after suffering an apparent medical emergency while scuba diving off Kewalo Basin.

According to the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department, lifeguards responded around 8:24 a.m. after receiving reports of an unresponsive diver aboard a vessel offshore. Rescue personnel boarded the boat and began CPR as it returned to shore.
