STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — PS 56 recently hosted its first-ever Arts Expo, a schoolwide showcase highlighting student achievement in visual arts, music and theater.
The event featured work from students in kindergarten through fifth grade and underscored the school’s push to expand arts education opportunities.
In the gymnasium, Visual Arts teacher Samantha Birch transformed the space into an immersive exhibit dubbed “The DeSario Diner.” The gallery included artwork from every student, with pieces inspired by food — from donuts and pizza to ice cream, chocolates and soup — ensuring all children were represented.
The expo also featured a live music performance led by teacher Jake Kitchen. The Band Academy presentation included the fourth-grade Strings Orchestra and the fifth-grade Band, as well as student musicians who performed solo piano pieces after participating in the New York State School Music Association festival…
