A Texas teenager who defied a daunting 2% survival chance at birth tragically lost her life in a car accident while en route to her new summer job.
Makynna Eden Tumlinson, a beloved prom queen from the small town of Tom Bean, Texas-located about an hour north of Dallas-was driving her Chevrolet Cruze on June 3 when the fatal incident occurred. Traveling north on State Highway 11, Tumlinson lost control of her vehicle and collided with the rear of a commercial truck.
Investigators reported that the crash involved Tumlinson’s Chevrolet Cruze striking the back of a 2007 International truck. Both vehicles came to a stop in the northbound lane. The truck’s driver, 37-year-old Hector Ivan Mejia Garcia from Allen, Texas, sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
Makynna’s mother, Stephanie Tumlinson, shared the heartbreaking details of their final conversation just moments before her daughter left for work. “She was headed to a new job, and we had talked right before she left,” Stephanie told local station KXII News.
Stephanie described Makynna’s life as nothing short of a miracle. At birth, doctors gave her only a 2% chance of survival, fearing she might be stillborn. “She beat those odds,” Stephanie said.
Makynna’s father, Tommy Tumlinson, located her through a phone tracking app and rushed to the scene upon realizing where the accident had occurred. The family was overwhelmed with panic and hope in the immediate aftermath. “From that point on, we were just panicking, hoping they got something wrong,” Stephanie recounted.
Known for her vibrant spirit and kindness, Makynna was not only a prom queen but also a cheerleader and president of her student council. Stephanie hopes her daughter will be remembered for her open heart and willingness to befriend anyone, regardless of age.
“Nobody should have to bury their children,” Stephanie said, struggling with the devastating loss. “I keep thinking it’s a nightmare I’ll wake up from and she’ll walk through the door.”
In honor of Makynna, a makeshift memorial has been set up at her high school parking spot, adorned with flowers, stuffed animals, and candles as friends and community members pay tribute to the young life taken too soon.
