Is it St. Louis’ or St. Louis’s?

ST. LOUIS – Language and grammar evolve or change over time. Look at American English; sentence structure, pronunciation, and writing style – all have changed over the centuries.

If all this sounds too heady, let’s narrow our focus to something simple, like sugary carbonated beverages. Oh, you thought I’d say, “soft drink” or “soda”? Depending on where you are in the country, the generic term for a beverage can be different: pop, coke, cola, cold drink, soda pop, fizzy drink, etc.

Still too broad? Okay. Think of that long six to eight-lane roadway that runs through Downtown St. Louis, just south of the Saint Louis Zoo, and all the way out to Wentzville. Do you call it “Interstate 64” or “Highway 40”? Both are correct. And if you do call it the latter, do you pronounce it “Highway Forty” or “Highway Farty”?…
