Showers, storms continue before heat returns midweek

It was quite the active day in New Mexico. Strong to severe storms developed throughout the state dropping hail, localized heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts. Today, the Albuquerque Metro Area got in on the action as showers and storms moved in this evening. A storm cell in Dona Ana County turned severe this evening, which brought heavy rainfall south of Las Cruces as it moved into El Paso, Texas. Showers will linger tonight with cloud coverage as lows fall into the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s statewide. After the morning, another round of showers and storms are forecasted for Monday afternoon/evening.

Those showers and storms will develop at the start of the afternoon and will become isolated to scattered in coverage. A few storms could become strong to severe in northeast New Mexico. Those storms could bring localized heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts and hail. After Monday’s forecast drier air settles into the state bringing spotty rain chances to the southern mountains. The dry air will also bring back the heat to millions on Tuesday and Wednesday. Forecasted high temperatures on Wednesday reach the triple digits in the east and southern New Mexico. The hottest temperature, so far, is 107 degrees for Roswell for that day. We will just have to wait and see how hot we get that day.

In addition to the dry air returning to the state, breezy winds are forecasted to develop on Tuesday and Wednesday. This may contribute to fire weather conditions and wildfire danger across New Mexico and southwest Colorado. The National Weather Service (NWS) will issue Fire Weather Watches on Tuesday from 1-9 pm for sections of Montezuma and La Plata counties. Moisture does trickle back in later in the week, which will contribute to isolated to scattered showers/storms. High temperatures are still expected to remain warm and hot throughout this week; however, a backdoor cold front will bring cooler temperatures to the east by Thursday afternoon…
