Malnourished 4-Year-Old Found Beside Mothers Body in Shocking Discovery

Additional Coverage:

In Montagnac, near Pézenas in France’s Hérault department, emergency responders made a distressing discovery on June 4. A malnourished four-year-old girl was found lying next to her deceased mother in their apartment, where it appears the child had been trapped with the body for several days.

The mother, a 40-year-old woman reportedly living with epilepsy, was found unresponsive around midday. The young girl was suffering from malnutrition, dehydration, and shock but was promptly taken to the hospital. She is now in stable condition and receiving care from a family member.

Investigators are currently leaning toward natural causes as the explanation for the mother’s death. No signs of forced entry or violence were reported by neighbors, who noted nothing unusual in the days leading up to the discovery.

An autopsy is pending, but authorities suspect the woman may have died from complications related to an epileptic seizure. It is believed the child, too young to unlock the door, was unable to seek help as the key was left in the lock.

The situation came to light when the girl’s kindergarten teacher alerted the police after the child failed to attend school. Efforts to contact the mother or her family had gone unanswered.

According to local reports, concerns had already been raised after the mother did not respond to messages from relatives and neighbors since May 31. Philippe Audoui, the first deputy mayor of Montagnac, remarked, “She wouldn’t have lasted another day.”

The mother lived alone with her daughter and was not known to have a partner. Locals described the family as private and reserved. The tragic discovery left a deep impact on the community, prompting the establishment of psychological support services for those affected by the grim scene, which authorities described as “indescribable.”

The investigation is being led by the Pézenas gendarmerie in coordination with the public prosecutor’s office in Béziers. A police officer involved in the case recounted the harrowing moment they entered the apartment: “It was a horrific scene that really upset me. We often see deceased persons, but this… The foul stench was overwhelming as soon as the door was opened.”

Regarding the child, the officer added, “She screamed when she saw all those people around her.” Four officers initially arrived at the residence-a small social housing unit in a town with a population of about 4,880-but received no response after ringing the doorbell and knocking. Firefighters then gained entry by raising a ladder to the first floor and forcing open a window.

The community continues to grapple with this heartbreaking event as the young girl begins her road to recovery under the care of loved ones.
