EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The El Paso Independent School District could eliminate up to 50 teaching positions and nearly 200 other jobs as it works to close a $52.8 million budget deficit.
Cuts would also include social workers, educators, facilitators, and clerks, according to a warn list provided by EPISD to the Texas Workforce Commission. The cuts would also include 37 family, community and military liaisons.
“The District is committed to providing eligible employees with opportunities to apply for available positions for which they are qualified and will continue to support internal placement efforts whenever possible,” Patricia Cortez, EPISD’s chief human capital management officer wrote to the state agency.
Cortez told the commission the district is providing impacted staff with information about job search assistance and unemployment insurance.

While the cuts are subject to any changes, the board meets Monday, June 15, to consider recommendations from EPISD staff on the cuts, which includes teachers in their first year-probationary period and contracted teachers up to their third year.
