Early Life and Legal Struggles
Jelly Roll’s troubled past began in his teenage years when he was involved in drug dealing and selling CDs from his car. At 16, he was arrested and tried as an adult for aggravated robbery and possession of marijuana with intent to sell. Reflecting on that time, he told Billboard, “I never want to overlook the fact that it was a heinous crime… but, by the grace of God, thankfully, nobody was hurt.”
Facing a potential 20-year sentence, he ultimately served one year in prison followed by seven years of probation. Tennessee’s strict policies mean that the felony remains on his record permanently. Jelly Roll expressed frustration at being sentenced as an adult so young, saying it felt like the justice system “parked me on my only set path.”
After his release, he threw himself into his music career, initially hustling mixtapes directly out of his car. His 2010 collaboration with Lil Wyte, “Pop Another Pill,” garnered over 6 million views on YouTube.
In 2013, he released the album Whiskey, Weed, & Waffle House, which was later renamed Whiskey, Weed, & Women after Waffle House issued a legal challenge. Cleverly, Jelly Roll placed a cease-and-desist sticker over the original album title on the cover.
