Postmortem: Grafton debriefs about Town Meeting woes

GRAFTON – After a tumultuous and historic Town Meeting on May 11, the Grafton Select Board on May 26 reviewed what had gone right – and, more interestingly, what had gone wrong – at a 5-hour-long fiasco which drew more than 1,000 registered voters.

With a debt exclusion (Grafton Middle School roof) and Prop. 2 ½ override ask on the warrant, the May 11 meeting drew crowds from throughout Grafton. Over 1,000 voters attended, crushing the town’s average spring attendance (383) and nearing the all-time mark of 1,100 (2010).

Anticipating a crowd, Grafton increased capacity, setting up 250 seats in the Grafton High School cafeteria that would serve as an overflow to the auditorium if necessary. The town also secured 1,000 electronic voting “clickers” – some from other towns – to use if needed…
