Timber bridge to be built over creek in Rensselaer

RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A popular spot in Rensselaer is about to be more accessible thanks to $487,174 in federal funding from the Northern Border Regional Commission’s Timber for Transit program. Soon, NBRC’s program will help build a timber bridge over Quackenderry Creek.

The newly constructed bridge will provide access to the city-owned property that is better known as the Hollow. Congressman Paul Tonko selected the 68-acre nature preserve as a possible recipient for federal funding from his Community Funding Project Process in May, which would support the connection of the city’s waterfront trail, the Empire State Trail, and the Livingston Avenue Bridge Shared-Use Path.

“Also, with the help of Congressman Tonko, we are seeking funding for a welcoming Trail Head into the Hollow that will have parking, a play area and informational kiosks as well as on-road connections to several existing trails in the community (the Albany-Hudson Electric Trail, the Empire State Trail, the Rensselaer Waterfront Trail and the Multi-Use Path being added to the new Livingston Avenue Bridge) that will make the Hollow Trail an accessible resource for the broader community,” Rensselaer Mayor John DeFrancesco said.
