Bay Village 8th grader makes music history with Cleveland Orchestra debut

BAY VILLAGE – While most eighth graders were wrapping up their school year, Bay Village student Anton Bekeny was listening to his original composition performed live by members of one of the world’s most distinguished orchestras.

Anton, a student in the Bay Village City School District, earned a coveted spot in The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO) this year as a bassoon player — a remarkable achievement for any young musician, let alone one still in middle school. But Anton’s extraordinary year didn’t stop there.

He was also selected to participate in the COYO Composition Project, a prestigious program that pairs young musicians with professional composers for an immersive creative experience. Through the program, Anton worked closely with Tyler Taylor, composer in residence with The Cleveland Orchestra, in a series of workshops designed to guide students through the process of writing original music.

The result was Alpine, a Piano Trio that showcases both Anton’s musical skill and his creativity as a young composer…
