Milwaukee County leaders are moving to reallocate federal funding to go towards a rental assistance program for homeless people in the community.
Last month, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and the county’s Department of Health and Human Services proposed moving $2.5 million from the federal HOME program to the county’s tenant-based rental assistance program. The program allows the county to fund “security deposits and up to two years of rental assistance” for homeless people, according to a county report.
“Funds for rental assistance have been increasingly difficult to set aside for the purpose of reducing homelessness,” the report said. “Due to the dramatic rise in rents, Milwaukee County has been unable to issue new vouchers in 2026 as the program has met its budget cap.”…
