1862 — Battle/Engagement at St. Charles. A Union White River flotilla fought Confederate batteries at St. Charles; a shell hit the steam drum of the USS Mound City, killing 105 of the 175 Union sailors aboard – it may have been the single deadliest shot of the Civil War. With the river blocked, Union soldiers disembarked and gained possession of St. Charles as Confederates retreated.
