ST. LOUIS – Water safety concerns are swirling in downtown St. Louis after Legionella bacteria was discovered in the St. Louis Public Schools headquarters water system. This comes as a massive sinkhole nearby has impacted water infrastructure, leaving several fire hydrants out of service.
The St. Louis Public Schools headquarters closed as a precaution earlier this month following a state investigation. The investigation linked a case of Legionnaires’ disease in an employee to concerns about the building’s water system.
St. Louis Public Schools was awaiting additional test results on June 16 that could determine if the bacteria remained active. However, late Tuesday, the district stated those results had not yet been returned.
