FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – A potentially very busy day is ahead in terms of the weather forecast, with a lot of moving parts and things to monitor throughout the day. Severe thunderstorms with all hazards, including damaging winds and a few tornadoes, are possible later today.
As we’ve been forecasting here over the past few days, the potential for significant severe weather is there across the entirety of 21Country this afternoon and evening. A strong low pressure system will sweep across the lower Great Lakes this afternoon/evening and spark off thunderstorm chances across our area. Current timing has the highest severe threat from late afternoon well into the evening hours. Severe threat should be wrapping up shortly after midnight.
However, while the atmosphere looks primed this afternoon for severe weather, there are also several limiting factors that may temper the threat here locally. Morning rain showers may sap some of the fuel that the storms will have to work with, potentially taking a bit of energy out of the afternoon round of storms.
Another thing to watch will be where the warm front sets up across 21Country. North of this warm front will be much drier air, and a reduced severe threat. Along and south of this front however, a moist and unstable air mass will be very conducive for storms to form with an all hazards threat.
Today will be a day where weather conditions may change rapidly in the span of only a few hours. As a result, today is a First Alert Weather Day for the aforementioned severe threat. Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts this afternoon/evening…
