Fire forced popular Staten Island restaurant to close for a week; now it’s back, and so are Banana Tuesdays

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Banana Tuesdays are back at Panini Grill. The West Brighton tradition was abruptly cut short exactly one week ago when an electrical fire forced the restaurant to close around 4 p.m. The promotion lives up to its name — half trays of whatever the kitchen is turning out that day, offered at a discount.

“I know … it’s crazy,” owner Peter Macri said of the deal. The week itself proved just as unpredictable.

The fire, which started in his office, was contained to that space, but smoke damage required nearly a week of cleanup and inspections before the FDNY and Con Edison cleared the restaurant to reopen…
