New World screwworm is no stranger to Texas. UT professor shines light on pest’s history

TEXAS — After decades of being eradicated in the United States, the New World screwworm (NWS) has returned to Texas.

According to a dashboard from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, there are at least 11 active cases in the United States: 10 in Texas and one in New Mexico.
