Shoppers to pay extra tax after New Iberia approves development district

The New Iberia City Council unanimously approved a new Economic Development District on Tuesday over minor public opposition.

The EDD will comprise the Lagniappe Shopping Center at 1102 East Admiral Doyle Drive. According to New Iberia mayor Freddie DeCourt, the developer requested the EDD in exchange for bringing in several national chain stores to the city. The district will allow the city to raise additional revenues through a one-cent sales tax on all purchases made in the EDD, which in turn will be used to facilitate upgrades and repairs to the shopping center’s parking lot.
