ST. LOUIS — As St. Louis prepares to celebrate Juneteenth, the Historic Wellston Loop is drawing on the legacy of freedom to fuel its own fight for economic independence.
“It’s one thing to say that you’re free,” said Farrakhan Shegog, lead organizer of the Black Wall Street 314 Festival. “But it’s another thing to have the economic willpower and the economic resources to be able to sustain that freedom.”
Driven by that mission, Shegog and the community group Young Voices with Action are working to transform a historically disinvested stretch of Martin Luther King Drive into a thriving business epicenter…
