NC Senate considers bill to make highway license plate reader program permanent

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Drivers across North Carolina could soon see more license plate reader cameras along highways if state lawmakers approve legislation making a pilot program permanent.

House Bill 206 would allow the State Bureau of Investigation’s highway license plate reader program to continue beyond its current July 1 expiration date. The bill has already passed the North Carolina House and is now under consideration in the Senate before heading to Governor Josh Stein’s desk.

Asheville is one of several cities participating in the pilot program, which allows local law enforcement agencies to place license plate reader cameras on state-owned property, primarily highways…
