Forecasters say showers and thunderstorms are expected to fire up later in the day, with the heaviest action likely from midday into the afternoon. Brief heavy downpours and frequent lightning are on the table, and heat-index values could climb into the upper 90s before storms roll in. Some stronger cells may kick out gusts near 25 mph.
When Rain Arrives
A few light showers could sneak in by late morning, but the real rain chance ramps up by late morning and peaks from about noon through the 4 p.m. hour on Thursday. Most spots are expected to see between a quarter and a half inch of rain, although any stronger storm could drop more in a hurry and leave roads slick in patches. Winds will run out of the south-southwest at 5 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Forecasters now expect the line of storms to move through faster than earlier thought and to wind down by Thursday evening, leaving most of Friday and Saturday dry, according to the National Weather Service.
