Elementary school in Tiny Texas town hit by PTA scandal

A Parent Teacher Association in a small South Texas town is under police investigation after concerns surfaced about the handling of its finances.

The Alice Police Department has opened an investigation into the Schallert PTA, according to a news release issued by the Alice Independent School District on Thursday morning. Robert Schallert Elementary School serves roughly 563 students in Alice, a South Texas city located about 45 miles west of Corpus Christi.

“It has come to the District’s attention that concerns have been raised regarding the handling of funds by the President of the Schallert Parent Teacher Association,” the release reads. “The campus was first notified of a potential issue by the financial institution where the PTA maintains its accounts.”

Alice ISD said they immediately reported the matter to the Alice Police Department, and will comment no further due to the open investigation. Chron contacted the Alice Police Department for comment Thursday, but was told details are not yet publicly available…
