The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) is warning residents about an increase in vehicle burglaries across the city, many of which are being described as crimes of opportunity involving unlocked vehicles.
According to LPD, a significant number of recent vehicle break-ins have occurred because suspects have been able to easily access vehicles left unlocked. Investigators say offenders are targeting cars and trucks in neighborhoods and other areas where valuables are visible or vehicles are unsecured.
To help prevent thefts, the LPD is urging residents to lock their vehicles at all times and avoid leaving valuables inside whenever possible. If items must be left in a vehicle, police recommend storing them out of plain sight, such as in a trunk or glove compartment…
