Rio Rancho landfill to close in ’28, future unclear

RIO RANCHO — The Rio Rancho Waste Management Landfill is set to close by the end of 2028, the head of the site said on Wednesday.

Doug Shimic, WM landfill manager, made the announcement in a virtual town hall meeting meant to explain why and the next steps following the closure of the landfill, located at 1132 Carpenter St. NE. The meeting was first announced by the city, which for decades has contracted with WM for solid waste and recycling services.

The site, open since 1985, will shutter when the landfill is expected to reach capacity and its permit with the New Mexico Environment Department will expire, Shimic said.
