RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Asa Ellerup, the ex-wife of convicted Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann, expressed through her lawyer on Friday that she believes Heuermann, 62, “got what he deserved” following the maximum sentence handed down this week for the murders spanning from 1993 to 2010.
Bob Macedonio, Ellerup’s attorney, emphasized, “She believes the sentence is appropriate for his crimes. You cannot take the lives of eight people and expect anything less. She would never condone such acts.”
Since Heuermann’s transfer from Suffolk County Jail on Thursday, he has had no contact with Ellerup or their children, Macedonio confirmed. Heuermann was being processed at Green Haven Correctional Facility in Stormville, New York; his permanent placement remains unclear.
In a revealing episode of the Peacock docuseries “The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets,” Ellerup shared the haunting detail that she now sleeps in the room where Heuermann tortured and murdered seven of his eight known victims. “The brutal truth is that Rex Heuermann said he dismembered the bodies in this room,” she said. “I am here because I feel a spiritual need to express my sorrow for what these victims endured.”
At sentencing, Judge Timothy Mazzei did not hold back, condemning Heuermann as a “coward” and a “small man” for the heinous crimes involving eight women, each roughly 5 feet tall and weighing about 100 pounds.
Addressing Heuermann directly, Mazzei asked, “Are you at least a little bit sorry for what you did to these poor, innocent women?” Heuermann responded affirmatively.
“You’ve been described as a very big man, but you’re a disgusting and despicable small man, if you’re a man at all. And you’re a coward,” Mazzei said, visibly emotional.
Heuermann received three consecutive life sentences without parole, followed by four consecutive terms of 25 years to life. After dismissing lesser charges, the judge ordered bailiffs to remove him from the courtroom.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney stated that authorities anticipated Heuermann’s removal from local custody before the week’s end, which occurred the following morning.
Ellerup filed for divorce shortly after Heuermann’s arrest outside his Manhattan office on July 13, 2023. Police quickly moved into the family’s home in Massapequa Park, an otherwise upscale neighborhood about 35 miles east of New York City.
Heuermann has been charged with the murders of seven women since his 2023 arrest and confessed to an eighth killing during a plea hearing in April 2024. District Attorney Tierney refrained from speculating on additional victims, noting any new evidence would be presented to a grand jury for potential indictments.
