Fourth Upstate Medical University worker detained by ICE at Syracuse Airport

An Upstate Medical University worker was detained by ICE at the Syracuse Airport Wednesday night, the fourth one in the last year, union officials said on Thursday. The man was then released with an ankle monitor.

Dame Ka was traveling from Syracuse to Atlanta to watch the World Cup games. Ka said he had traveled many times within the U.S. since moving here from Senegal in 2023. He had picked up his boarding pass from a gate agent then was heading to the TSA security checkpoint when he was approached by immigration officers in plain clothing.

“There was four people, two people in front of me and one behind, then one was on my left side,” Ka said. “I said, can you guys tell me why you guys arrested me and they said we’re gonna go to the office, we’re gonna do some paperwork and we’re gonna release you today.”…
