Nurse Practitioner Who Wrote About Medical Necessity Sentenced in $12 Million Medicare Fraud Scheme

A nurse practitioner who presented herself as an authorityonmedical necessity and patient-provider ethics has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison.

Prosecutors said Dr. Scharmaine Lawsonparticipated in a multimillion-dollar Medicarefraudscheme involving medically unnecessary cancer genetic tests.

Baker, 59, of Fulshear, Texas, was sentenced to 87 months in prison and three years of supervised release after a federal jury previously found her guilty on six counts of healthcare fraud.

Federal prosecutors said Baker caused more than $12.1 million in false Medicare claims and was ordered to pay $1,508,868.25 in restitution…
