A groundbreaking narcotics investigation by the Dallas Police Department has resulted in the first conviction in Dallas County under Texas’s new fentanyl murder law, marking a significant milestone in the fight against deadly drug trafficking.
Authorities announced that 29-year-old Destin Scott has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to supplying narcotics that led to a woman’s fatal overdose. The conviction is believed to be the first in Dallas County under legislation enacted in 2023 that allows drug dealers to be charged with murder when they provide fatal doses of illegal substances.
Overdose Death Sparked Investigation
The case began on December 11, 2024, when Dallas Fire-Rescue crews responded to a report of an unresponsive woman inside a parked vehicle at a business located in the 7900 block of Great Trinity Forest Way.
