Crews rescue hikers stuck on 500-foot cliff face at Mt. Olympus West Slabs

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — Search and rescue crews responded to hikers that were stranded on a ledge on the Mt. Olympus West Slabs.

According to the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SLCSAR), they responded to a call on the Mt. Olympus West Slabs. Three college-age hikers had reportedly made plans to ascend the West Slabs, summit, and then hike the main Mt. Olympus trail down and began their hike around 6:30 p.m.

The hikers made it to an elevation of about 7400 feet, when one of the hikers took a “short slip” down the slab. Fortunately, he was able to stay on the wall, at which point his partner caught him and was able to keep him from falling further down the 500-foot face.

The two individuals were on a very narrow ledge, with the third hiker and a bystander about 60 feet above them. The hikers ultimately called 911 and expressed concern that they could not hold on much longer…
