What I can’t get on BookTok

In any given week, I spend about 40 hours at the office, more than 100 at home, and a dozen or so out and about. My first place, my home, is my foundation – where I eat, sleep and recharge. My second place, the office, is where I’m most productive, strategic, efficient and driven.

But my third places? The environments where I find connection, community, conversation and a deeper sense of engagement with the world around me? Those are the spaces that make me feel alive.

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third places” in the late ‘80s, defining them as “a generic designation for a great variety of public places that host the regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms of home and work.”…
