Augusta YMCA Feeds 40,000 Children Per Week Through Free Summer Meal Program

The Family YMCA of Greater Augusta delivers food to more than 50 spots across Georgia and South Carolina. Thousands of kids can’t get to school cafeterias when summer arrives. Each week, the group hands out 30,000 to 40,000 meals to children 18 and under without charging a penny.

Any child 18 and under qualifies. Rain or sunshine, the vans keep rolling. Registration isn’t needed.

Amber Henry runs finance and food programs at the Family YMCA of Greater Augusta. She explained how vans bring meals straight to neighborhoods where kids might be stuck at home while their parents clock in at work. “It’s very important for our vans to go out into the communities to be able to help those children. Maybe children are at home. Certain ages are able to stay by themselves when their parents are at work. Those kids may or may not know how to cook. We try to fill those gaps where they are still getting meals they can make themselves,” said Henry, per WRDW…
