‘Our building is coming to life:’ Virginia Museum of History and Culture gears up for ‘IllumiNATION’ event

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – The Virginia Museum of History and Culture will host “IllumiNATION” starting Thursday. It is a video art projection of America’s story on the nearly 250-foot-long building.

The museum will display 18,000 square feet of historical images, videos, art and other visuals on the building facing North Arthur Ashe Boulevard, covering 250 years of American history in less than 20 minutes.

“It’s not just a PowerPoint show through history. Our building literally comes to life. So, you’ll see our building be projected as a church during the Civil Rights Movement. You’ll see fire engulf the building showing images from the Civil War,” said Sam Florer, director of public programs at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture.

“We’re traveling through a lot of different time periods, a lot of those major historical events and milestones and individuals that people are going to recognize and then some people, some events that average viewers won’t recognize,” Florer said.

A block party will take place on the museum’s campus before the projection begins at 9 p.m. The party will feature live music, food and drinks, a bounce house and a petting zoo. A cultural presentation will also be included…
