It’s good news! SIUH first borough hospital to offer Varian Ethos radiation therapy

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital has become the first medical facility on Staten Island to offer the Varian Ethos radiation therapy system with HyperSight imaging technology, thereby bringing one of the most advanced forms of radiation treatment directly to local cancer patients.

The radiation therapy system has been described as cutting-edge technology that enhances the delivery of external beam radiation through artificial intelligence-driven adaptive treatment planning and high-definition imaging, which allow clinicians to tailor treatment to a patient’s anatomy in real time.

A key feature of the Ethos system is adaptive radiotherapy, a transformative approach that accounts for the natural changes that occur in the body throughout the course of treatment.

“With traditional radiation therapy, most treatment planning is based on a CT scan obtained at the start of treatment,” said Dr. Chika Madu, chair of radiation medicine at the hospital. “But tumors can change in size, shape and location over time, and normal organs can shift from day to day. The Ethos system takes those changes into account in real time, adapting treatment to the patient’s anatomy on the day of care.”…
