HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. — A Maryland man has filed a lawsuit against the Hamilton County Sheriff, the Hamilton County Jail and its medical provider, alleging jail officials ignored serious medical needs that ultimately left him hospitalized with sepsis and near death.
The lawsuit, filed by Elshell Darvy Bertus, claims he suffered severe infections after receiving inadequate medical treatment while incarcerated at the Hamilton County Jail in 2025.
