Still no official cause for Rainbow Terrace Apartment Complex fire 1 year later

CLEVELAND (WJW) — It’s been a year since flames tore through an apartment complex on Cleveland’s east side and the cause is still a mystery.

On June 23 last year, an explosion started a massive blaze at the Rainbow Terrace Apartment Complex on Garden Valley Avenue.

Five people were hurt, and 30-year-old Cordale Sheffield later died from his injuries after suffering serious burns. He reportedly went back into the flames to rescue his stepdaughter.

While the exact cause is unknown, Cleveland Division of Fire now tells FOX 8 they believe they have an idea of how it began.

“We do believe it was a natural gas explosion, and we do not believe that it was an intentionally set fire,” Lt. Mike Norman told FOX 8 Tuesday. “You know, I don’t think it was an act of arson. But investigations are ongoing, there up a scope that is beyond what the Division of Fire can handle.”…
