AI played a big role in stopping a Colorado wildfire that sparked in rugged terrain

Recent months have brought plenty of talk about artificial intelligence, from concerns to benefits to everything in between. One positive that hasn’t been discussed much is how artificial intelligence can help officials spot wildfires faster.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Log Jumper Fire sparked when lightning hit a tree on June 20, with the blaze quickly prompting an evacuation warning for a three-mile radius that included the Devils Head Recreation Area. Burning in rugged terrain, it was believed the fire could pose a potential threat to both life and property.

That said, the fight against the fire was very successful, with its growth stopped at about one acre and the evacuation warning lifted later the same night. Why was the firefighting effort so efficient? A key factor was how an artificial intelligence system detected the blaze early.
