CLEVELAND — At Cuyahoga County administrative headquarters, council members are split over whether voters should get a say on tax changes that could remain in place for decades.
“I think this is a stain on us. And I think we have to remove that stain with the public. And by telling the public we’re no longer going to just throw a tax on you without your vote, without your direction, without your authority and okay,” said Council Member Michael Gallagher.
Cuyahoga County is already home to some of the highest city and school district tax rates in the state.. and council is considering multiple tax expansions and proposals such as a stadium sales tax increase to support sports arena repairs and repurposing the Jail Sales Tax which might allow revenue from the current 40-year jail sales tax to be used for things like public safety and jail functioning…
