Sunday night’s severe weather spawned more than a dozen tornadoes across Indiana.
The National Weather Service Indianapolis confirmed tornadoes in Owen, Bartholomew, Sullivan and Martin counties on June 21. Additional tornadoes were reported in the southwestern and southeastern parts of the state.
In Sullivan County, an EF1 tornado had peak winds of 100 mph and was on the ground from 6:22 p.m. to 6:27 p.m. It developed west of County Road 300 E. and ripped the roof off of a barn. The tornado caused “extensive damage” to a grove of trees between CR 300E and CR 375E and damaged three structures in that area. It also uprooted trees and brought down tree branches.
The Owen County tornado hit near Patricksburg. It was classified as an EF0 with peak winds of 80 mph and traveled a little less than a mile. The tornado was on the ground for about three minutes (6:56 p.m. to 6:59 p.m.), with mostly tree damage involving large limbs and a few small tree trunks.
In Martin County, an EF0 was on the ground for about six minutes from 7:58 p.m. until 8:04 p.m. It had peak winds of 85 mph and covered more than two miles. NWS said the weak tornado developed along Dover Hill Road, moving southwest where it peeled the metal roof off a barn, tossing it about a hundred feet. Tree damage was also reported.
A third EF0 hit Bartholomew County. NWS said it had peak winds of 85 mph and was on the ground for less than half a mile between 8:12 p.m. and 8:17 p.m. The tornado started east of U.S. 31 near Taylorsville, moving through a cornfield and uprooting large trees near W. 450 N. and N. 100 W…
