Rockford has a new strategy to spur homebuilding on vacant lots

ROCKFORD — The city is developing a new strategy that’s designed to make it easier for homebuilders to expedite construction on vacant lots.

The goal is to address the city’s need for more housing while filling residential lots that were left vacant after blighted properties were demolished.

“This is us wanting to build back. Why expand when we have all of this there that’s got water, sewer, sidewalks, the school’s already have it in there, storm sewer has already been accounted for it,” said Sarah Leys, the city’s director of community and economic development. “Let’s put it here. Let’s build that neighborhood back.”…
