Tucson teens learn construction skills with Sunland Asphalt

On Wednesday, June 17, about a dozen high school girls who took part in Camp NAWIC in Tucson participated in a hands-on learning experience with Sunland Asphalt & Construction, the longest-standing asphalt company in the state of Arizona.

During the field trip to Sunland Asphalt’s Tucson location, 2850 E. Valencia Road, the teen girls learned about the variety of equipment and materials used in asphalt maintenance and repair, received instruction on how to operate a paver before taking turns using it, and got a chance to stripe lines or stencils in the parking lot. They also received a tour of the office, shop and yard, watched a PowerPoint presentation and heard from the women on staff about their roles at the company.

“Construction has traditionally been viewed as a male-dominated industry, but that reality is changing,” said Matt Johnson, CEO of Sunland Asphalt & Construction. “Unfortunately, too many high school girls don’t realize that they can enjoy a rewarding and financially solid career in a construction-related field. We are proud to support Camp NAWIC and help these young women see firsthand that there is a place for them in this industry.”…
