SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Clouds have overtaken Central New York with developing showers and potentially a nasty thunderstorm later this Thursday. Most of the area should escape without the wicked wind, but some areas could be threatened between 2 PM and 11 PM. It’s not only wind, but also some hail or heavy rain in places. Fingers crossed, we just pick up a little more rainfall, but I want to make sure with this Weather Aware that you are not caught off guard if, by chance, this materializes where you are.
Due to the rainfall, expect rising humidity levels and slightly below normal high temperatures in the afternoon. High temperatures range from the upper 60s to the west, to the mid-70s, especially to the east.
Here’s the outlook from the Severe Thunderstorm Prediction Center for today and tonight, which includes a low risk for damaging winds for CNY. I believe this might be underdone for the area, with a more moderate damaging wind risk anywhere in our vicinity between 2 PM and 11 PM Thursday.
Along with high wind gusts, there is a very low chance for a tornado, some hail, and heavy rainfall in places to the west and northwest of Syracuse. Here’s the rainfall forecast by sunset.
The forecast for the next two days shows improvement for the overnight and Friday, but it’s not perfect. Still some lingering showers and a low chance for a thunderstorm midday and early afternoon Friday as the cold front moves through. It will be humid and turn warmer tomorrow.
You might want to enjoy the last day and night, where air conditioning might not be needed due to the temperature and humidity levels. Mid-summer heat builds over the weekend and into next week. Heat Advisories might come into play by the middle of the week. Here’s a look at the 6 to 10-day temperature outlook.
And the complete 7-day extended outlook shows mostly dry weather Saturday through Tuesday, with the pick day being Sunday. That day will be mostly sunny, warm, and see low humidity in the afternoon.
THURSDAY: Increasing and thickening clouds in the morning with scattered showers developing late morning or midday. Otherwise, cloudy, with more numerous showers and thunderstorms arriving during the early to middle afternoon, with some sunny breaks possible late in the day as the activity turns more scattered in nature once again. A few strong thunderstorms are likely later in the day, possibly severe with damaging wind gusts, hail, and even a slight chance of a tornado after 2 PM. Mild & turning humid. Wind: SSE 3-8 in the morning, then SW to ENE 5-10 with gusts to 15+ MPH. High: 75 around 1 PM, then falling later in the day…
