Lubbock veteran to lead world’s largest VFW department

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Texas Department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is the largest in the world, and its new leader calls Lubbock home.

Benny Guerrero Jr. said he was first inspired to join the military in 6th grade, after watching the assassination attempt of President Ronald Reagan. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 26 ½ years.

“Your name is attached to the veteran name — to that title ‘veteran,’” he said. “You can never, ever detract from it. You got to build on it. So never let anyone question your integrity, your character, your honor.”
