Markwayne Mullin Sparks Heated Clash Over ICE Deaths in House Hearing

Additional Coverage:

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin faced intense questioning from lawmakers during a contentious House Appropriations Committee hearing on Thursday, centered on allegations of detainee deaths at Department of Homeland Security facilities.

The hearing grew heated as Representative Lauren Underwood (D-Illinois) confronted Mullin over what she described as “historically high” death rates and poor medical care within the immigration detention system. Underwood cited her visit to the Miami ICE facility in Bunker Hill, Indiana, where detainees reported long delays-sometimes months-in receiving necessary medication for serious conditions like diabetes, as well as untreated infections. She noted that a detainee had died shortly after her visit and highlighted that more detainees died in ICE custody in 2025 than in any previous year.

In response, Mullin challenged the accuracy of Underwood’s statements, disputing the reported numbers and emphasizing that the death rate in DHS facilities is lower than in some state penitentiaries, including those in Illinois. The exchange quickly escalated into a heated back-and-forth, with both parties speaking over each other and the committee chairman, Rep. Mark Amodei (R-Nevada), intervening to maintain order.

Mullin also pointed to staffing comparisons, noting that federal detention centers have a higher doctor-to-patient ratio than state facilities in Illinois, arguing that criticisms should be considered in that context.

This contentious hearing came just a day after a federal judge ruled against the administration’s practice of making arrests in immigration courts-a policy widely implemented during the previous administration’s second term-adding another layer of scrutiny to DHS operations.
