Venezuelans in Evansville show support for loved ones in the country rocked by earthquakes

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — A devastating earthquake in Venezuela has left hundreds dead and injured, while families across the world anxiously await news from loved ones. In Evansville, members of the local Venezuelan community are now organizing efforts to support those affected by the disaster.

The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Wednesday night, making them the strongest earthquakes to hit Venezuela in more than a century. The hardest-hit region was the country’s coastal area west of Caracas, where widespread building collapses have been reported.

For Evansville resident Alfonso Vidal, the disaster became personal almost immediately. His family lives in a compound of three homes in Venezuela, and while they survived, the damage was extensive. “They live in a compound of three houses. My sister and her family live in the middle house. And my uncle and aunt live in the middle house, which the picture shows the carport collapsed,” Vidal said…
