Eugene launches Patterson Street pilot to make multilane crosswalks safer

EUGENE, Ore. — A new pilot project on Patterson Street is set to kick off Eugene’s latest push to make multilane crosswalks safer, as the city responds to community calls for changes at crossings where multiple lanes can obscure people walking and biking.

The City of Eugene is beginning the pilot on Patterson Street between 19th and 24th avenues, aiming to improve safety along the four-block stretch.

“Every life lost on our streets is unacceptable,” said Reed Dunbar, senior transportation planner for the City of Eugene. “These upcoming improvements at multilane crossings are practical, effective steps we can take right now to make our streets safer for everyone who walks, bikes and drives.”…
