EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — School districts in Texas are facing financial hardships that are hard to explain. As budget talks ensued across the state last spring, school districts like the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) and the Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) were staring at multi-million dollar budget deficits.
Both YISD and EPISD were forced to make tough decisions in adopting their 2026-2027 budgets, especially the latter who declared financial exigency, cut staff, eliminated hundreds of positions, and saw two board members and their chief financial officer resign.
